Da'Sean Downey, a 2014 defensive end at the Canterbury School in New Miford, CT, has verbally committed to play football for the University of Massachusetts.
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound athlete told the Maroon Musket that he spoke to UMass assistant Ted Daisher and committed over the phone. He said he has been recruited by Boston College, Penn State, Duke, Old Dominion, UConn and others.
Downey played high school ball at Woodlands High School in New York before taking a prep year at Canterbury. While at Woodlands, he was receiving interest from a few FCS schools, including Towson and Maine.
Last June, Downey was named the Defensive MVP of the New York vs. New Jersey High School Football Classic.
Downey is the 16th commit for UMass' 2014 class and the fifth athlete slated to play defensive end.
